The effect of dietary fat on the turnover of cholic acid and on the composition of the biliary bile acids in man.

چکیده
Because of the strong influence of dietary fat on serum cholesterol levels, there has been a great deal of interest in possible parallel effects on bile acid formation and excretion. The output of bile acids in human feces has been determined in several studies by a variety of chemical and isotopic procedures. Values have been reported ranging from less than 0.1 to as high as 2 g per day (1-9). In several of these studies, the inclusion of unsaturated fat in the diet has been found to cause an increase in the total bile acid output, which might account for the concomitant decrease in serum cholesterol level (1-4). On the other hand, in other studies, no such effect of unsaturated fat on the total bile acid output was observed (8, 10-13). Direct analysis of fecal end products is beset with serious technical problems, making it difficult to obtain valid quantitative results (14). The bile acids produced in the liver (cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid) are radically modified by bacterial action in the intestine, giving rise to an extremely complex, heterogeneous mixture of products (15, 16). If changes in the diet alter the relative abundance of the several fecal bile acids, then an analysis limited to only one or a few components could give an incomplete and erroneous impression of the changes induced in total bile acid excretion. Lindstedt (17) has previously reported an isotopic method for determination of cholic acid turnover in man based on serial measurements of the

Effect of fish oil replacement by poultry waste oil in feeds on growth parameters, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
The present study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary fish oil replacement by poultry fat on growth performance and fillet quality, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Three diets were used in this experiment, containing different percentages of poultry fat (0% (D1), 50% (D2) and 100% (D3) replacement with fish oil. The fish were reared as three treatments; the fish fed D1 diet; the fish fed D2 diet; ...
متن کاملEffects of fasting on bile acid metabolism and biliary lipid composition in man.
The effects of a four to six day fast on gallbladder bile lipid composition, bile acid pool size, bile acid composition, and cholic acid metabolism have been determined in normal human subjects. Total bile acid pool size and cholic acid pool size were measured before and after fasting by a one-sample technique previously validated in our laboratory. The rate of synthesis of cholic acid and its ...
متن کاملEffect of dietary n-3 versus n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids on hepatic excretion of cholesterol in the hamster.
Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-6 and the n-3 class show differing effects on serum lipids and hepatic lipoprotein metabolism, which could be induced by alterations in hepatocellular cholesterol balance. As both fatty acid classes exert parallel effects on lipoprotein uptake and synthesis of cholesterol in the liver, we studied whether they have differing effects on the excretory p...
متن کاملHepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase activity and biliary lipid composition in man: relation to cholesterol gallstone disease and effects of cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid treatment1
The present work was undertaken in order to study whether or not there is a relation between hepatic HMG CoA reductase, hepatic cholesterol concentration, and biliary lipid composition. In 55 patients (10 with adenomyoma of the gallbladder wall, 45 with cholesterol gallstones) a liver biopsy together with gallbladder and hepatic bile were obtained at laparotomy under standardized conditions. Of...
متن کاملEffects of lovastatin and dietary cholesterol on bile acid kinetics and bile lipid composition in healthy male subjects.
We measured bile acid kinetics and bile lipids in 12 human subjects on a metabolic ward in four randomly allocated, 6-7 week periods: 1) lovastatin (40 mg b.i.d) + low cholesterol diet (mean 246 mg/day); 2) lovastatin+high cholesterol diet (mean 1071 mg/day); 3) low cholesterol diet alone; and 4) high cholesterol diet alone. Lovastatin did not significantly alter fractional turnover, synthesis,...
